Last night I had to chair an acrimonious meeting at the Allotment Association. Under discussion was a neighbourhood dispute that has been simmering away for years, and which recently boiled over into strong words, exchanged (heaven forbid) on the allotment property.
Trying to chair and keep control of this petty, ridiculous meeting was one of the most difficult things I have ever done. So hard to be firm and authoritative, avoid the descent into chaos, yet also let everyone have their say.
The nub of the matter turned out to be that in a heated exchange, one allotment-holder had called another allotment-holder an “arse”.
