That the term “currying favour” derives from the era of the British Raj in India?

To win over the local maharajas and thakurs, the British would often employ a local cook to prepare delicious curries. These would be served to the indigenous Indian leaders as part of the diplomatic process required to gain their cooperation with British rule. Hence, “currying favour”.

The controversial “currying favour” system was only finally brought to an end by Mohandas Gandhi.
