It’s 1am, and I’m in Singapore airport. This is basically a pointless blog post to celebrate free high-speed internet terminals, everywhere! This is the only airport I know of that has a roof-top cactus garden, where you can go and smoke clove cigarettes with Arabs in white robes. It is 27 degrees and steamy, which is how it always seems to be in Singapore, with no distinction made for season or time of day.
Hooray for modern times and authoritarian city-states!

now I understand the singapore statement. It seems you are very up-to-date. Its a funny world here in SL, very immediate. like brains don’t have enough room for much beyond the immediate. Well, thats my excuse for not knowing what is happening anywhere in the world unless someone tells me. I’m really not sure what you mean by the Iranian political circus for example… and you live in oxford now???

I was about to say “took hostage”, because that is the phrase that has been used most in the media, as in “hostage crisis”. But then I was thinking, why when the Americans grab Iranian soldiers is it referred to as an “arrest”, but when Iranians grab British soldiers they are “hostages”… it´s all just a sneaky way of giving legitimacy to one government and not the other, like the old terrorist / freedom-fighter dichotomy.
as for Oxford - I´ve just started a new job up there, doing internet publishing with the University Press. it´s pretty interesting work, and a little bit intimidating.
