The word elegant derives from the French, elle a gants. This translates literally as “she has gloves”.
In the golden age of the European aristocracy, only women who wore gloves were considered “elegant”. And the French were considered to be the very summit of propriety and manners. It was only later that they started making fart noises with their lips.
