Chuck Hagel, of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today claimed of his country that:
“We are the adult power in the world.”
This is slightly weird as a diplomatic statement. It certainly plays into the hands of those who would claim that the USA is an imperialist power, with strong echoes of the 19th century British imperialist discourse that frequently likened colonial natives to children.
I wonder what sort of parent we are supposed to imagine here? Obviously, one with quite a penchant for corporal punishment.
