Apples and Pears

That means “stairs”. - I read that in a book somewhere.

But in the place I am working now, there are real, live Londoners, who have real London slang. Here is a brief selection of what I have gleaned so far:

“pony” - derived from “pony and trap”, i.e. crap.

“burgered” - broken, ruined… probably derived from buggered

“oily rag” - cigarette, as in fag

“have a butcher” - take a look; provenance unknown, but definite suspicion of rhymology

“pants” - again, crap; provenance unknown

“pete tong” - wrong (PT is a popular English DJ)

Wot you chat'n bout?

“wot you chat’n bout?” - what do you mean, anyway?
